This series contains quarterly and monthly reports and abstracts of expenditures of the State Salt Works which were prepared by or for the Salt Commissioner from 1863 to 1865. The bulk of the records are from the year 1864 and were prepared by Benjamin M. Woolsey, who succeeded Abner G. McGehee as Salt Commissioner in 1864 Jan. Woolsey's quarterly and monthly reports often include a letter to Gov. Thomas Hill Watts explaining operations at the Salt Works. Reports and abstracts cover a variety of topics: the amount of salt produced, sold, traded, and transferred; items such as shoes, shirts, pants, and coffins that were produced at the Salt Works; the amount of commissary stores produced, purchased, and rationed; the amount of forage and fodder purchased and consumed; durable property purchased and sold; payrolls for workers including the name and occupation of each; payments to slaveholders whose slaves were leased to the Salt Works; commissary thefts; the purchase of medicines for the infirmary; wastage of meats; and the death of mules, horses, and oxen. Also included are frequent reports from W.L. Dodson about the collection of toll salt from the Lower Salt Reserve. N.S. Brooks, Superintendent at the Salt Works, often compiled the quarterly and monthly reports when Woolsey was either ill or absent.
